XXO Cognac 1974 – 1976
XXO Cognac casks from the prestigious Grande Champagne region (350 litres, 1974–1976)
In the first quarter of next year, we will welcome something unique: exclusive XXO Cognac barrels from 1974–1976! These 350-litre barrels come from the Grande Champagne region, the finest region for Cognac, and have a wonderful flavour profile.
Grande Champagne
Grande Champagne is the most important and prestigious cru in the Cognac region, located in south-western France. Incidentally, the name has nothing to do with the sparkling wine Champagne; the word “champagne” comes from the Old French campania, which means “limestone-rich open land”.
Location
Located in the heart of the Cognac region, around places such as Segonzac, Jarnac and the town of Cognac itself.
Together with Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires, the above-mentioned towns form one of the six officially recognised crus (production zones) that are legally defined for the production of Cognac.
Soil and climate
The chalky clay soil with fine white limestone, similar to that found in Champagne, provides the ideal foundation for the vineyards.
This soil retains moisture extremely well, which benefits the vines, especially during dry summers.
Style of cognac
The eaux-de-vie (the base alcohol for cognac) from Grande Champagne are known for their great finesse, elegance and longevity.
These barrels bear the aromatic signature of five decades of ageing. During this long period, the Limousin oak has developed particularly intense and complex notes:
Initially light and floral, they develop deep aromas of:
dried flowers
vanilla
honey
dried fruit
spices
